The door gasket is essential for maintaining the temperature and energy efficiency of your Sub-Zero refrigerator. Over time, gaskets may wear out, leading to air leaks, higher energy bills, and reduced cooling efficiency.

Why is Your Sub-Zero Door Gasket Important?

Your Sub-Zero refrigerator’s gasket seals the cold air inside, keeping food fresh and ensuring your appliance runs efficiently. If your gasket is damaged or worn out, air can escape, causing the refrigerator to work harder and potentially increasing energy consumption.

How to Replace the Sub-Zero Door Gasket
Replacing the door gasket is a simple process that can be done without professional help.
Signs You Need to Replace Your Sub-Zero Gasket

  • Your refrigerator or freezer runs constantly
  • You notice moisture or condensation around the door
  • There are visible cracks or tears in the gasket
  • The door no longer closes tightly or seals properly
Things You'll Need for the Replacement

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Hex-head screwdriver
  • Replacement gasket
  • Baby or talcum powder
  • Petroleum jelly

Step 1: Inspect the Door Gasket for Signs of Damage

Inspect the gasket around your refrigerator door for cracks, tears, or signs of wear. If the door gasket is damaged, warm air can seep into the fridge, causing temperature inconsistencies and higher energy consumption.

Tip:
Perform the “dollar test” by sliding a dollar bill between the fridge door and gasket. If it easily slides out, it’s time to replace the gasket.

Step 2: Order the Correct Replacement Gasket
Ensure you purchase the correct gasket for your Sub-Zero model. For example, the Genuine Sub-Zero Door Gasket 7042262 is compatible with models like the 550
650, 650-2, 650-3, 650RG. Not sure which gasket fits your refrigerator? Check the model number or use our Gasket Parts Catalog to find the perfect match.

Step 3: Loosen the Old Gasket
  1. Unplug your refrigerator to save energy while working.
  2. Lift the edge of the old gasket to reveal the screws securing the metal retainer.
  3. Use a hex-head screwdriver to slightly loosen the screws around the gasket. Be careful not to remove them entirely.

Tip:
When loosening the screws, turn them just enough to release the gasket but leave them attached to the door. This will save time when tightening the new gasket in place.

Step 4: Remove the Old Gasket
Carefully pull the old gasket away from the door. If it’s stuck, gently pry it off using a putty knife to avoid damaging the door.
Once removed, dispose of the old gasket responsibly by recycling it or following local disposal guidelines for refrigerator parts.
Tip:
If the old gasket has become stiff or brittle, use a hair dryer on low heat to soften it, making removal easier without cracking it.

Step 5: Prepare the New Gasket

Before installing the new gasket:
  • Lay the new gasket flat for 1-2 days if it has twists.
  • Use warm water to soften any warped sections of the gasket for a better fit.

Step 6: Install the New Gasket

  1. Position the new gasket on the door, starting with one corner.
  2. Slide the lip of the gasket into the door's groove or behind the metal retainer.
  3. Tighten the screws to secure the gasket in place. Be careful not to overtighten, which could damage the door liner.
Tip:
When tightening the screws, work your way around the door in a clockwise pattern to ensure the gasket is evenly secured.

Step 7: Apply Talcum Powder and Petroleum Jelly
  • Apply a light layer of baby or talcum powder to the corners and edges of the gasket. This reduces friction when the door opens and closes.
  • Rub a small amount of petroleum jelly along the hinged side of the gasket to prevent twisting or warping.
Talcum powder can also help prevent the gasket from sticking to the fridge frame, especially in high-humidity environments.

Step 8: Check for Gaps in the Seal
After installing the gasket, close the fridge door and check for gaps. If you notice any, use a hair dryer on low heat to soften the rubber and ensure a snug fit against the fridge.
Tip:
Move the hair dryer in circular motions to distribute the heat evenly. Avoid holding it too close to the gasket to prevent damage to the material.
